Security risk assessment guide

How to conduct a security risk assessment for your property
A security risk assessment identifies the threats your property faces, evaluates existing vulnerabilities, and prioritizes the measures needed to close the gaps. It is the foundation of any effective security program—without it, you are guessing.
Step 1: Identify assets and threats
List everything worth protecting—people, equipment, inventory, data, reputation. Then identify the threats specific to your location and industry: theft, vandalism, workplace violence, unauthorized access, fire, natural disasters. Be realistic, not optimistic.
Step 2: Evaluate current vulnerabilities
Walk the property with fresh eyes. Check perimeter fencing, lighting, camera coverage, access points, alarm systems, and emergency exits. Document blind spots, broken locks, unmonitored entrances, and areas where loitering occurs. These are the entry points criminals will exploit.
Step 3: Assess likelihood and impact
Not every risk is equal. Rank each threat by how likely it is to occur and how severe the impact would be. A low-probability, high-impact event (active shooter) requires different preparation than a high-probability, low-impact event (petty theft).
Step 4: Develop a mitigation plan
For each prioritized risk, define the countermeasure—security personnel, technology upgrades, policy changes, or physical improvements. Set a timeline and budget. Reassess quarterly.
